Salzburg in July/August is the time of the famous Salzburg Festival, it is a very big and important event on the cultural calendar, which means that if you want to see one of the mainbill shows you’ll need to book in advance (and it could be very expensive).

They are doing seven operas this year (including two by the inevitable Mozart – Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute), along with plays and then also concerts and recitals by some leading classical groups including the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras.

They have smaller concerts as well, though, and also a youth program for young singers and young directors, so there should be some cutting-edge stuff as well. The festival has a very good website – in English: http://www.salzburgfestival.at/index.php?lang=en
